away from here
As wary as i am of posting two entries in a row that are pictures of xkcd, this one is just for reference. After reading yesterday's comic, it reminded me of a joke told by my senior design professor in class the day before:
An engineer was driving down a back-road highway, and all of a sudden a frog appeared in the passenger seat. the frog said to the engineer "I'm a magical frog. if you kiss me, i will turn into a beautiful princess and i will stay with you for a while." The engineer just laughed, and kept driving. After a few miles, the frog said "I'm a magical frog. If you kiss me, i will turn into a beautiful princess and i will stay with you forever." The engineer laughed again and continued to drive. After another few miles, the frog said "i'm a magical frog! if you kiss me, i will turn into a beautiful princess and i will stay with you forever and do whatever you want." Once again, the engineer laughed and simply continued to drive. The frog had had enough. It said "i don't get it, why won't you kiss me?" and the engineer replied "i'm an engineer. a talking frog is much more amusing to me than a beautiful woman."

take off your band-aid
i want to remember last night as one of the best i've had in years. dancing with professor thomas (a lot), my professor for the first hard class we had at college. getting a hug from becene (after he refused to dance with any of us), the last professor i will have at this school. teaching sanjay to dance, even though he never wanted to. having one last hurrah with all the seniors i will never hear from again.
i want to remember today in much the same way. i walked around campus this afternoon during a thunderstorm, which will always be my favorite weather. i listened to the thunder outside, remembered prof. thomas quizzing me on the band of the songs that were playing, and felt almost out-of-place for being so happy with where i am right now.
tonight has just been weird, and i almost started to miss him, which would be the worst thing i could do. i don't know where i'm going with that thought, i just want to be able to look back later and remember that i'm doing the right thing, no matter what.

and my heart stops every time
i adore being in town for days like today, when i woke up early this morning to take them to school. we arrived outside that beautiful brick building, only more lovely in the morning sun, and after he jumped out of the car and we wished him a good day, she turned to me and said "i don't feel like going in yet, let's get some coffee."
and that is how i found myself home at 7:45 this morning with a cup of coffee and an episode of six feet under, then out again for a real breakfast and two more cups of coffee with my cousin. she invited both my sister and i to be aunts for her children, which is quite a step up from being a cousin once removed.
now i've been awake for six hours, and still have a full day ahead of me. i should get myself out of bed earlier more often, even if only for more time to relax and watch six feet under all morning.

nature's way
I have to recap my evening with Helen Thomas before the events of the night fade from my memory. We asked her to speak for Women's History Month, and she gave a really touching opening to her speech about how far women have come since women's suffrage, and it was really really lovely. Aside from giving a fantastic speech about the decline of our government (of course), she gave really funny stories about people who gave her a hard time for being the hard-ass during press conferences, and how she's so disappointed in today's media and how scared they are of asking the important questions.
After her speech, we went to her reception. I brought 3 books for signings: one for me, one for my grandmother, and one for my step-father. We took a picture with her as a group, and I got pushed to the front somehow (i'm short!) and she held my hand during the picture. Then I got one of just me and her. And when she signed my book, she asked what i study, and I told her "mechanical engineering", and she did that cute half-gasp-half-smile that old people do when you impress them, and said, "well, I guess we don't have to worry about women's history anymore." And it was really touching! I'm quite the happy camper. Pictures to come!
